After the revolution in Sainte-Domingue (1791–1804), another wave of African people brought their religion to New Orleans. The Vodou tradition was strengthened and reinforced by the free and enslaved African community of New Orleans. Jacques and Marie were married only a year, but we know just as little about their day-to-day life as we do about Jacques Paris’ ill-timed vanishing act. Catherine's daughter Marguerite (Marie's mother) was owned by her own father, which was a twisted case of reality during the eighteenth century, leading all the way up to the Emancipation Proclamation. Marguerite was freed from her father at 18, but was then forced into an arranged relationship with an older, rich white man. She had three children by him, and tried to remain positive despite her situation, but she still secretly wanted more and dared to "audaciously" wish for love. Serving the New Orleans community since 1972 and bringing you a casual and curious experience intended to preserve the legacy of New Orleans' Voodoo history and culture while educating and entertaining visitors. Marie was a beautiful and dynamic woman who balanced her devout Catholic upbringing and belief with the ‘roots’ of her voodoo practice.

The house is a classic Los Angeles Victorian, built by prominent "surgeon to the stars" Charles Montgomery for his wife, Nora. Requiring financial stability due to Nora's lavish tastes and Charles' addiction to diethyl oxide, they performed many abortions in the home's basement, one of which resulted in the death of Charles' only known assistant. Eventually, as a form of retribution, their son Thaddeus was kidnapped and dismembered by the boyfriend of one of the women Charles performed an abortion on. Charles used his surgical expertise to "resurrect" his son using the beating heart of one of his clients, but Thaddeus was restored as some kind of creature.
They were well known practitioners of spiritual charms and Marie grew into the public title of hoodoo doctor and later a leader of the voodoo spiritual community.
